Now You See Me 2 (2016)

Before I start the review I'd like to put a few trivia highlights about the film in case you didn't know.

1. Lizzy Caplan replaced Isla Fisher due to Fisher's pregnancy.

2. There will be a third installment which was announced over a year ago.

3. The newly joined actor Jay Chou has played magic tricks, especially card tricks, in several popular TV shows in Taiwan and Mainland China.

4. Now You See Me 2 marks the sixth time Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine have appeared in the same project.

Now for the review

Young director Jon M. Chu (36) took over duties from Louis Leterrier who had several action films under his belt before 2013's Now You See Me which was definitely a reason for the films success. Chu however did not have as much experience in action film other than 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation which did poorly with fans and critics alike. Now You See Me 2 however is the film that will solidify him as an excellent action director and a much needed confident boost for the studio since he is signed on to do part 3. What I loved most about his style is that it took me back to the 80's and 90's style of action and conflict. Some may see it as Hollywood cheese, but I loved it.

The film begins with us learning about the death of Dylan's (Mark Ruffalo) father Lionel Shrike who drowned while trying to perform a magic trick. This one event sets the tone for the film and keeps us guessing at what happened this terrible night. When we come back to the present and meet up The Horsemen Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson) and Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) have all been in hiding waiting for The Eye to give them there next move. Atlas grows impatient with Dylan, who gives orders from The Eye, as he wants to get out of hiding and back into the game. It's at this point that Dylan introduces the team to their new Horsemen Lula (Lizzy Caplan) and shows them their next assignment.

The Horsemen are sent to take down Owen Case who is premiering a new cell phone which will allow him to steal everyone's identity and sell it on the black market. The Horsemen show up and take over the convention only to learn that they have been setup. They escape but "magically" find themselves across the world at the will of young Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe) who has a special assignment that only The Horsemen can pull-off.

Now, obviously there is a lot more to the story but I don't want to spoil anything for you. Throughout the film Chu does some great special effects work and the cinema magic that these people do is truly fun to watch. Since we don't have to really learn about the characters, the first film did that for us, we can jump right into the action and that is what Chu does here. In all honesty this film feels like a part 2 of 3 and not a sequel; if that makes sense. By the end you know there is so much more to the story still to come.

I would say this film is a 7.5 and is good to really good. I thought the story was great and the ending was fantastic. Well done!!
