'Thor: Ragnarok' First Look Revealed By Entertainment Weekly

Thor: Ragnarok is the only 2017 superhero movie without an official sneak peek of any kind yet. However, Entertainment Weekly has now changed that with a new cover story, revealing a very different looking Thor and the very first appearance of two new female characters.

Instead of having Chris Hemsworth pose alongside a photoshopped Hulk or Mark Ruffalo, or even Tom Hiddleston's Loki, this cover puts him alongside Cate Blanchett's evil Hela and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie.

Hela had been seen in two concept art photos, although she had a helmet on in both. EW even needed to clarify on the cover that it is Blanchett with a long dark haired wig, a darker right eye and a green costume. In contrast, this is the first look of any kind of Valkyrie and of Thompson in character as Thor's new ally.

Thor needs new allies and a new haircut after Hela banishes him to the gladiator planet of Sakarr, which Hemsworth says is filled with "people from all walks of life with all sorts of incredible abilities and powers." On such a planet, no one cares about Thor's royal status and everyone is evenly matched with him or better, including Valkyrie and the no longer missing Hulk.

Nonetheless, Hulk and Valkyrie eventually help Thor try to get back to Asgard and stop Hela, the Goddess of Death who is "unleashed and she ain’t getting back in that box,” according to Blanchett. Yet despite the urgency to foil her, writer/director Taika Waititi has made Ragnarok a "decidedly more comedic installment for the series" as Hemsworth even wondered "Are we pushing it too far? Are we allowed to have this much fun?"

Waititi still assures EW that it is "a slight shift" and not one that turns the film into "a ridiculous broad comedy where no one gives a s— what happens." How that will look on the big screen, how the likes of Loki, Odin and Doctor Strange fit in, and how it forms the final major piece of the puzzle before Avengers: Infinity War is still unclear.

EW will surely provide more to go on when its new issue is released later this week, and when more photos and stories are posted online. As for actual footage, a teaser will probably be saved until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 comes out on May 5, although all of Thor: Ragnarok is still being saved until Nov. 3.
