Sylvester Stallone is enjoying his biggest resurgence in years with Creed, showing new life in Rocky Balboa that could carry him all the way to the Oscars. But when it comes to his next most iconic hero in John Rambo, it appears Stallone will settle for taking him into television.

According to Deadline on Dec. 1, Stallone has closed a deal to executive produce a Rambo TV show for FOX -- fittingly called Rambo: New Blood -- although it is uncertain if he will appear in it. Yet as described by Deadline's Nellie Andreeva, having Rambo around is crucial to a series centered on his previously unknown son.

Written by feature writer Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive), the Rambo TV series, from Entertainment One and Avi Lerner’s Millennium Films, pays homage to the films, exploring the complex relationship between Rambo and his son, J.R., an ex-Navy SEAL. J.R. is a new character not been featured in the movies that has been added as a way into the series. As the logline suggests, Rambo would be a key character on the show unlike other TV series followups, like the proposed Beverly Hills Cop series for CBS, which centered on the son of Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley, with Murphy only slated to make occasional appearances.

Rambo could barely interact with people when he wasn't killing them, and barely shared any screen time with women in his four movies, with the exception of some scenes in Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo. As such, picturing him with a grown son might be a bit of a stretch, but there have been bigger in this series.

Nevertheless, Andreeva claims there is "conflicting information" on whether Stallone has struck a deal to play Rambo on the show, although an option is in place. Given his newfound good will, box office success and potential awards to come for Creed, Stallone certainly has more leverage on his side now.

Creed already proved that a legendary Stallone character could mentor a younger man in his old profession, find new depths that appeared to be lost decades ago, and start over a franchise that seemed to run its course. Of course, the Rambo series has always been a far different and far more brutal animal than the Rocky saga.

Stallone last revived the Vietnam veteran in Rambo in 2008, which seemed to be the end of the line for him. Now a decade later, he seems ready to bring Rambo back in a new way with a new younger partner -- just like with Creed about a decade after Rocky Balboa appeared to end that franchise.

Stallone's legendary characters have defied death for decades on and off screen, and keep finding new ways to come back, so it is only fitting that Rambo gets another life -- especially now that Rocky is proving what can be done with yet another chance.
