It was no secret that Cable was a character the Deadpool creative team wanted to explore if they were given the chance to make a sequel. The writers, director, and even the stars involved in the movie have talked up the character, and he’s consistently been mentioned by fans on social media as the team-up character they’d like to see Deadpool work with next. Veteran action actor Stephen Lang is one of the people who’d like to see him on the screen, and he’d like to play him.

Lang is known for his roles in Avatar and the short lived series Terra Nova. Currently starring in the AMC genre bending series Into the Badlands, he spent some time in the gym recently and he shared that he’s interested in laying “some CABLE” on twitter.

He’s not the only one who thinks he would be great for the role though. His twitter feed is full of mentions of support from fans who would love to see him take on the role. In fact, even Rob Liefeld, co-creator of the comic book characters, had wanted Lang in the role in 2009 when X-Men Origins: Wolverine was in production and there were plans for a different Deadpool solo movie. Liefeld recently threw his support behind Jon Hamm on his own twitter account, but he probably wouldn’t be averse to Lang in the role since he supported him in the past.

The Deadpool film, of course, finally made its way to theaters this weekend after a long production process, and in a post movie fourth wall breaking moment, Deadpool announced a sequel himself to the audience, and he did confirm that Cable, time traveling mutant with a bionic arm, would be in it. So, we can likely take it as gospel that the character will at the very least make some sort of appearance in the film.

Of course, the question is really whether we could see him on screen before a Deadpool sequel since Cable was also a character featured in the X-Force movie that was in development and placed on hold. The character has also popped up in New Mutants comic books on occasion, which has a completed script as well. It’s only a matter of time before he shows up in one of the movies.

There’s no word just yet on when a Deadpool sequel would head into production. Though a script is being worked on and the film teases a franchise in its dialogue, FOX hasn’t made any official announcements about a sequel yet. With the movie opening higher than any X-Men movie has though, and breaking records for an R-rated opening weekend, it’s likely going to be soon that they officially clear a spot in their schedule for it. After all, announcing a sequel before the movie even hit theaters showed a lot of confidence in it. They likely won’t want to wait too long to get audiences back in theaters.

You can catch Deadpool in theaters now.
