Speculation Builds That 'Han Solo' Could Move Release to Dec. 2018

Until The Force Awakens and Rogue One, it was a Star Wars tradition to release episodes in late May. Now it is becoming a tradition to move Star Wars films from May to December, with new speculation that the young Han Solo movie will be the next chapter to uphold it.

The website MakingStarWars.net claimed its "sources in the theater industry" received paperwork suggesting Han Solo could be moved from its May 25, 2018 release date to Dec. 13, 2018. The site stresses that it "does not conclusively mean" the release date has changed, but it alleges its sources have "panned out many times" before.

Han Solo is allegedly supposed to start shooting in February, although it currently only has Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke and Peter Mayhew confirmed in the cast. If there aren't any new casting announcements in the next few weeks or so, it could be a sign that they aren't in a real hurry, or at least not as much as they would be if the movie was still due out next May.

If it was moved back, it might be of particular interest to former Star Wars distributor 20th Century Fox, and to James Cameron. Over a month ago, Fox reserved a new Cameron film for a Dec. 21, 2018 release date, with speculation that the new film would be Avatar 2. If Disney winds up releasing Han Solo a week earlier, it could set up a massive holiday showdown between space franchises, although Cameron and Fox have already pushed back Avatar 2 a few times before.

For now, Han Solo and Episode IX are still scheduled to be released in May 2018 and May 2019. Yet by the time Episode VIII continues the Star Wars holiday trend this Dec. 15, it could be a different story on both counts.

Star Wars' first attempt to link itself to the holidays was in its infamous TV holiday special in the late 70s. Now Star Wars might well end up embracing being a holiday tradition in theaters, after so many failed efforts to get a film out in May again. Whether Han Solo ends up being the latest failed attempt before it even starts shooting may be answered before too long.
