Michael Rosenbaum Revealed To Have 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2' Role

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 less than two months away, it is fairly late for important casting news to break. Nonetheless, writer/director James Gunn helped unveil the secret casting of former Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum with several weeks to spare, and linked it to the mystery of whatever Sylvester Stallone is doing in the film too.

After Gunn broke the news on Adam Carolla's radio show, Rosenbaum made his own announcement on Twitter before Gunn himself replied.

It was no accident that Rosenbaum tagged Stallone in his post along with Gunn and Marvel. While Gunn didn't say who or what Rosenbaum was playing, he did say it is "a pretty decent role" that "works in tandem" with Stallone's similarly unknown character.

Gunn also said Vol 2 has new characters that are “very important to the Marvel universe," although he wouldn't say if he meant the ones people currently know about. The sequel is already introducing Ego the Living Planet/Peter Quill's father, his traveling companion Mantis and female villain Ayesha, yet Gunn and Marvel have still refused to state Stallone's identity or show footage of him. Now with Rosenbaum attached to the mystery, the questions will keep coming.

Either way, Vol 2 marks Rosenbaum's return to the comic book genre, after years of playing a young Lex Luthor on TV's Smallville. Since the show ended in 2011, he has done voices for superhero video games and animated films among other projects, but this is the biggest movie production he has been in by far.

Yet he could have been part of the Guardians years ago in an even bigger role, although Chris Pratt ultimately beat him out to play Star-Lord himself. Nonetheless, Gunn has apparently found a way to bring longtime friend Rosenbaum into the galaxy after all, even if he may keep the exact details a secret right to the end.

Whether or not Gunn releases any more clues, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will reveal all in theaters on May 5.
