'Hidden Figures' Big Surprise Winner At SAG Awards

The SAG Awards were the last major pre-Oscars award show that La La Land couldn't dominate, since its snub for Best Ensemble was its only real awards season setback. Conventional wisdom suggested either Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea would win and further clear up who La La Land's top Oscar competition was, yet it was Hidden Figures who closed the night with the big victory instead.

On the same weekend that Hidden Figures crossed $100 million domestic at the box office, it racked up its biggest award by far, with Taraji P. Henson capping a night of emotional acceptance speeches on behalf of Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons, Kristen Dunst, Moonlight Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali and the cast.

The only other result that defied the typical award season convention this year came from Best Actor, where Casey Affleck's momentum was haulted by a Denzel Washington victory. Since the last Best Actor SAG winner not to take home the Oscar was Pirates of the Caribbean's Johnny Depp in 2003, it could signal that Affleck doesn't have things locked up at the Oscars after all, although Ali, Best Actress winner Emma Stone and Best Supporting Actress winner Viola Davis may be another matter.

While the SAG Awards were the rare show this month not controlled by La La Land, it still took another big step with a Producers Guild Award victory the previous night. A victory for Damien Chazelle at the Directors Guild Awards on Feb. 4 may help seal up that race as well, leaving Best Actor as perhaps the only real question mark left before the Oscars themselves on Feb. 26.

In the meantime, the full list of SAG Awards winners for movies and television is below.
