Although Doctor Strange won't be out for another week, Marvel surely has sequel plans lined up already. While director Scott Derrickson hasn't been named to helm that sequel yet, he told Den of Geek part of his vision for it.

Critics are already comparing the original to Iron Man, namely through comparisons between Stephen Strange and Tony Stark. But Derrickson actually sees the larger Doctor Strange story like The Dark Knight, in that now that he's told the origin story, he wants the sequel "to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep" and create "a more visceral experience."

Doctor Strange doesn't have a Joker like nemesis, as Derrickson went into the middle of Strange's rogue's gallery to find Mads Mikkelsen's Kaecilius as the origin story villain. But Batman Begins went into the middle of Batman's rogue's gallery with Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow, before bringing out the big guns in the Joker and Two-Face for The Dark Knight.

One of Strange's main villains in the comics is actually Mordo, yet in Doctor Strange, Chiwetel Ejiofor's version of him starts as a mentor and an ally. Perhaps turning him into a villain for the sequel would provide the effect Derrickson is aiming for.

He may need to wait a while for that, since Marvel still has the rest of Phase 3 to get through. In fact, Strange and Benedict Cumberbatch will be a part of Avengers: Infinity War on May 4, 2018 before any solo sequel. What's more, Strange will become part of the new crop of Avengers when all is said and done, as Cumberbatch confirmed at a London press junket.

This will surely assure a solo sequel sooner rather than later, although the soonest would probably be in 2020. Whether or not Derrickson gets to make it and flesh out his early vision is another matter to settle before long.

American audiences will get their first look at Derrickson's vision for the original Doctor Strange on Nov. 4.
